Three jars, one colour

A hundred grams of grind comes to about 3 small jars. It is the size at which a single mill run starts doing visible work: the colour and the fineness hold from the top of the pouch to the bottom, because none of it was blended from separate passes.

It is also big enough for the pouch to show the one thing grind does and whole caps never do. Powder settles. When you buy fly agaric online the pouch is the first thing you see, and a pouch that left here full can arrive looking short of full, because the journey packs it down and drives the air out from between the grains. Nothing has gone missing: the weight is set on the scale at the mill, and it is still 100 g however much room it happens to take up by the time you open it.

The last C$5 before postage stops

C$145 stops C$5 short of the C$150 threshold. Until an order crosses it the tracked parcel is the flat C$21, 2–8 business days, or C$32 by Xpresspost. 200 g clears the line, which is worth knowing before you order two of these.

Two 100 g pouches come to C$290; one 200 g pouch is C$253 for the same powder, C$37 less, and it travels free instead of paying the C$21. The reason to take two anyway is wanting two seals rather than one, which is not nothing at this weight.

C$ 1.45 / g at a hundred grams

C$145 for 100 g. The next size up costs C$253 and brings the gram to C$ 1.26 / g, about 13% lower; 50 g at C$83 is the way down if a hundred is too much powder to keep sealed.

From cap to grind

Wild Amanita muscaria caps from British Columbia, dried at 40 °C, finished briefly at 90 °C, cured three months under vacuum, then stone-milled. Milling is the last step and the pouch is sealed the same day.

A grind cannot be identified by eye once it is powder, so identification is settled in the forest. After that it is a question of storage, and powder is less forgiving than whole caps.

^* No cap comes out of a forest perfectly clean, and a brush only gets so far. Expect the odd spruce needle, a fragment of dry leaf or a little soil in the pouch. We do not wash them: washing would put back the water the dryer spent 36 hours taking out.

Anything sold for people to eat falls under Canada's food and natural health product rules, which is why this is sold as a botanical specimen instead.
