One jar of grind

Thirty grams is the smallest amount of powder we pack out, and the smallest that shows what a proper grind looks like: light cream-ochre with faint orange flecks in it. A dark, chaga-brown powder is a sign of scorched drying or stale caps, and thirty grams is enough to tell the difference on sight.

A small pouch, not a small batch

The smallest pouch is not the tail end of anything. The mill turns once per batch, and every pouch from this one up to 500 g is filled out of that same run; what separates them is the reading on the scale.

C$ 1.83 / g at the smallest size

C$55 over 30 grams. The milling is identical at any weight, so the small pouch simply carries more of the handling per gram. 50 g is C$83 and takes the gram to C$ 1.66 / g, about 9% less.

Postage on a small order

C$55 sits C$95 below the C$150 free-shipping line, so the parcel is the flat C$21 tracked at 2–8 business days, or C$32 by Xpresspost at 1–3 business days. One rate to every province and territory, whatever the pouch weighs.

It is also the one weight where postage is a real share of what you pay: C$21 on a C$55 pouch is about 38% on top of it. Because the rate is flat, that share shrinks with every step up the scale, and past C$150 it disappears.

One more step after the caps

This is specimen № 001 milled. The same wild British Columbia caps, dried at 40 °C with a brief 90 °C finish, rested three months in the dark, then stone-milled in a single run and sealed the same day. Eastern Europe knows the mushroom as мухомор, and the powder is that mushroom, ground.

Once the caps are milled there is nothing left to key out by eye, which is why identification happens in the forest and not in the jar.

^* No cap comes out of a forest perfectly clean, and a brush only gets so far. Expect the odd spruce needle, a fragment of dry leaf or a little soil in the pouch. We do not wash them: washing would put back the water the dryer spent 36 hours taking out.
