Two jars from one run

Fifty grams divides into about 2 small jars, which is the first weight where you can keep one sealed while the other stands out. Both come off the same continuous mill run, so the colour in the second jar matches the first.

The gram at 50 g

C$83 is C$ 1.66 / g, about 9% under the 30 g pouch at C$ 1.83 / g. 100 g is C$145 and lands at C$ 1.45 / g, another 13% down. The step you have just taken is the gentlest one on the ladder, 9% between the two smallest pouches against 14% from 200 g to 500 g: the gram keeps falling the whole way up, and it falls fastest at the end.

The same 50 grams as whole caps is C$86. The grind runs a few dollars under the caps at every size, and it is the same material either way, so the format is worth picking on which of the two you would rather have in front of you.

What the postage does here

C$83 is C$67 short of the C$150 line, so postage stays at the flat C$21 tracked parcel, 2–8 business days to any province, or C$32 by Xpresspost at 1–3 business days. Payment cleared before 6 pm Vancouver time goes out the same day.

Keep one of the two sealed

Two jars is the smallest number that lets you hold one against the other, and it is worth the trouble. Fill both, open one, leave the second closed and in the dark. Six months on, the sealed jar still shows what the powder looked like the week it was milled, and setting the open one beside it says what your shelf has been doing: light cream-ochre on one side, anything gone dull or brown on the other. With a single jar you are comparing today's colour against the colour you remember, which is not much of a comparison.

Milled in one continuous run

Each batch is stone-milled in a single run and sealed straight after, so a pouch is consistent end to end rather than blended from several passes. The caps behind it were single origin, dried at 40 °C with a short 90 °C finish and cured three months in the dark.

Ground material is more exposed to air than whole caps are, so the storage notes apply here more than they do to a pouch of caps.

^* No cap comes out of a forest perfectly clean, and a brush only gets so far. Expect the odd spruce needle, a fragment of dry leaf or a little soil in the pouch. We do not wash them: washing would put back the water the dryer spent 36 hours taking out.

Anything sold for people to eat falls under Canada's food and natural health product rules, which is why this is sold as a botanical specimen instead.
